Black, it’s all I see. Wait, maybe it’s not black, but darkness. Nothing, but darkness surroundng. No scenery, no monsters, yet I feel the cold bitter breeze bite my goosebumps. The air smells frozen, the breeze quiet yet buzzing loudly in my ear drums. The sky, the woods, not visible…I know I’m here though, the feeling of this subconscious place more familiar than the freckles on my face.
Pondering, perplexed…why can’t I see anything. Even this dark is splattered with luminousty.
Shaking from the blue atmosphere, realization hits…”open your eyes Derra”.
Hesitant and blinking a bit before keeping these forest colored peepers open, my brain collects itself enough to process that I am lying on the ground that endlessly landscapes my woods. The dirt, rocks and uplifted roots are frosted over as though powder sugar was sifted over a freshly baked coffee cake.
Paralyzed, my body can’t move or it won’t.
Smothered sounds of wolves aren’t heard, cracks from crows aren’t even sounds in the distance…this odd silence is more terrifying than the usual menacing monsters that peep. I start to yell for help. My own echoes bounce off each tree, right back to my ears. These minor yells morph into major screams that could be heard two miles away. “Help!” spills from my purple shaded lips like a new Fall Out Boy song playing on a loop.
These woods start to spin as this paralyzed fear enters my mind…
“Derra…Derra! Wake Up! You’re ok…Derra, I’m Here…Derra!”
